Overview
Norwegian Prima launched in August 2022 as the lead ship of NCL's Prima class, built at Fincantieri in Marghera, Italy. At 142,500 gross tons carrying 3,215 passengers at double occupancy, she represents a deliberate shift from NCL's previous strategy of building bigger and louder. The Breakaway-Plus class ships carry around 4,000 passengers on 165,000-plus tons. Prima carries fewer people in more space. The space ratio - gross tons per passenger - is around 44, which is closer to a premium line than a mainstream one.
The design feels like a step change from older NCL ships. Ocean Boulevard on Deck 8 wraps the ship with infinity pools, glass-bottom bridges, and outdoor dining. The Indulge Food Hall brings ten complimentary food stations that outperform any cruise ship buffet. The Haven suite complex spans five decks forward with its own pool, restaurant, and concierge. And 73 Studio cabins make Prima the best mainstream ship for solo travellers.
The trade-off is the NCL pricing model. Specialty dining still costs extra. The More at Sea package keeps getting tighter. And the gap between the advertised fare and the real cost remains wider than most passengers expect. But the ship itself - the space, the food, the design - is NCL's best work.
The Vibe
Who sails Norwegian Prima and what it feels like on board.
The average passenger age on Prima sits around 45 to 55, slightly older than NCL's Breakaway-class demographic. Couples make up the largest segment, followed by friend groups and a healthy solo contingent using the Studio cabins. Families appear during school holidays and on Caribbean sailings but are not the dominant group. The nationality mix leans American on Caribbean sailings from Port Canaveral, with a broader international spread on European deployments.
There is no dress code. NCL's Freestyle Cruising means wear what you want, eat where you want, do what you want. Nobody checks. Nobody cares. The atmosphere is energetic without being overwhelming - livelier than Celebrity but calmer than Carnival. Ocean Boulevard and the Observation Lounge on Deck 17 are the social spaces where the ship finds its personality. The vibe sits somewhere between a contemporary hotel and a resort - polished but not pretentious. After 11pm, the ship stays active longer than Cunard or Holland America but quieter than Royal Caribbean's mega-ships.
Cabins
Cabin guide for Norwegian Prima.
Prima has approximately 1,646 cabins across multiple categories. The standout is the Haven, spanning decks 12 to 16 forward with 107 suites, its own infinity pool, sundeck, restaurant, bar, and butler service. It is the best ship-within-a-ship product afloat. Standard balcony cabins run around 220 to 250 square feet with a Norwegian-style balcony. Inside cabins are compact at around 135 to 160 square feet. The 73 Studio cabins on decks 12 and 14 are purpose-built for solo travellers at 94 square feet with no single supplement.
For the best experience, book midship on decks 10 to 12 for balcony cabins - good stability, no noise from the theatre below or the pool deck above. Avoid deck 9 midship above the Prima Theater, which transforms into a nightclub and generates bass vibration. Deck 8 boulevard-facing balconies open onto the public walkway rather than the sea. The sweet spot for value is a midship balcony on deck 11.

Dining
Where to eat on Norwegian Prima.
The Indulge Food Hall on Deck 8 is the headline. Ten stations - Q Texas Smokehouse, Nudls, The Latin Quarter, Tamara, Seaside Rotisserie, and more - all included in the fare. The quality is a genuine step above any cruise ship buffet. Beyond the food hall, Hudson's and The Commodore Room are the two main dining rooms with open seating. The Local Bar and Grill runs 24 hours with pub-style food and sport on screen.
Specialty dining is where Prima shows its depth - and its surcharges. Palomar (Mediterranean), Le Bistro (French), Onda by Scarpetta (Italian), Food Republic (fusion), Hasuki (teppanyaki), Los Lobos (Mexican), and Nama (sushi) all carry a cover charge or a la carte pricing. The quality is high across the board, with Onda by Scarpetta and Palomar the standouts. On a 7-night sailing, budget for two or three specialty dinners at 20 to 30 GBP ( to ) each. The Indulge Food Hall means you never have to pay extra to eat well, but the specialty restaurants are where the kitchen really performs.
On Board
Entertainment, fitness, and facilities on Norwegian Prima.
The Prima Theater and Club runs production shows in the evening and transforms into a nightclub after 10pm. The entertainment lineup rotates but includes acrobatics, musical revues, and comedy. The Speedway on decks 18 to 20 is a three-level electric go-kart track with ocean views - a genuine thrill and unique to NCL's newer ships. The Galaxy Pavilion offers VR experiences, escape rooms, and simulator rides. The Observation Lounge on Deck 17 is one of the best public spaces on any cruise ship - panoramic views, comfortable seating, and a quiet atmosphere on sea days.
The fitness offering is solid. The Pulse Fitness Center runs classes, the Mandara Spa has a thermal suite, and the outdoor areas include multiple pools, hot tubs, and the Oceanwalk glass bridges on Ocean Boulevard. The Vibe Beach Club is a reservable adults-only sundeck with cabanas, premium cocktails, and a more relaxed atmosphere than the main pool deck. On sea days, the ship offers trivia, game shows, mixology classes, and the full spa and fitness schedule. The ship keeps busy without feeling frantic.
Where It Sails
Itineraries and homeports for Norwegian Prima.
Norwegian Prima follows the sun. Caribbean from Port Canaveral in winter and spring, repositioning to San Juan for Southern Caribbean sailings in autumn and winter, then crossing the Atlantic for Northern Europe and Iceland in summer. The 2026 schedule runs 7-night roundtrip Caribbean sailings from Port Canaveral (February through October), with Western Caribbean and Eastern Caribbean routing patterns visiting Great Stirrup Cay, Cozumel, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and St. Thomas.
The Southern Caribbean from San Juan (November 2026 through spring 2027) is the stronger itinerary - Curacao, Aruba, Barbados, and St. Kitts offer more variety and culture than the standard Western Caribbean loop. Summer 2027 sends Prima to Iceland and Scandinavia from Reykjavik and Southampton, with 10 to 11-night sailings through Icelandic ports and the Orkney Islands. The 17-night Transatlantic repositioning from San Juan to Rome (April 2027) is the best value sailing on the schedule.
