Overview

Norwegian Cruise Line invented Freestyle Cruising in 2000 and has spent the quarter-century since turning it into the defining feature of the brand. No fixed dining times. No assigned tables. No formal dress code. No mandatory anything. The idea is that you eat where you want, when you want, and wear what you want. It sounds like marketing copy until you sail on a ship with traditional fixed-seating dining and realise what NCL eliminated.

The fleet runs 19 ships across five classes, from the compact Sky and Sun up to the new Prima class. The range is broader than most passengers realise. Norwegian Epic (2010) and Norwegian Breakaway (2013) feel like mid-2010s mega-ships - go-karts, waterslides, Broadway shows. Norwegian Prima (2022) and Viva (2023) are a different proposition entirely: fewer passengers, more space per person, better dining, and a design language that leans premium without the luxury-line price tag. The Haven - NCL's ship-within-a-ship suite complex - appears on most modern ships and provides a genuinely private experience with its own pool, restaurant, sundeck, and butler service.

The trade-offs: NCL charges extra for almost all specialty dining, and the main dining rooms on older ships can feel like an afterthought compared to the specialty venues they want you to pay for. The drink package is good value but not cheap. WiFi has improved but remains inconsistent on older vessels. And the promotional pricing that draws first-timers in often hides how much the add-ons cost once you are on board. NCL is a very good product when you budget accurately for what you will actually spend. It is a frustrating one if you expect the fare to cover everything.

I've sailed on 2 of the 3 ships - Norwegian Star and Norwegian Prima .

Pricing & Fares

Norwegian Cruise Line fare structure and what's actually included.

NCL runs a tiered package system called More at Sea (formerly Free at Sea). Every booking comes with a base bundle, and the inclusions scale with cabin grade. Inside and oceanview cabins get fewer perks than balcony and Haven suites. A typical 7-night balcony booking includes an unlimited open bar (drinks up to $15 per pour), one to three specialty dining meals, a WiFi package, and a shore excursion credit. Haven guests get enhanced versions of everything.

The honest truth about NCL pricing: the advertised fare is rarely the full cost. The More at Sea packages add genuine value, but NCL has been tightening inclusions. As of early 2026, Starbucks and bottled water are no longer included in the standard drink package - they require a separate add-on. The shore excursion credit is modest. And once you factor in gratuities ($20 per person per day, auto-charged), drink package gratuities (20% on the package value), and specialty dining beyond the included meals, a 7-night NCL cruise on a Prima-class ship typically lands between 1,200 and 2,000 GBP ($1,500 to $2,500) per person all-in for a balcony cabin. That is competitive with Royal Caribbean and above Carnival, but below Celebrity and Viking.

Dining

Restaurants and dining on Norwegian Cruise Line.

NCL splits dining into complimentary and specialty. The complimentary venues include the main dining rooms (Hudson's and Commodore Room on Prima), the buffet (Surfside Cafe), The Local Bar and Grill (24-hour pub food), and the Indulge Food Hall on Prima-class ships. Specialty restaurants charge either a la carte or per-person and include Le Bistro (French), Onda by Scarpetta (Italian), Los Lobos (Mexican), Food Republic (fusion), Hasuki (Japanese teppanyaki), Nama (sushi), and Palomar (Mediterranean seafood).

The Indulge Food Hall on Prima and Viva is NCL's best dining innovation. It is a food-hall concept with ten stations - Q Texas Smokehouse, Nudls, The Latin Quarter, Tamara, Seaside Rotisserie, and more - all included in the fare. The quality is better than the buffet by a significant margin, and the variety is genuine. On older ships without the Food Hall, the dining gap between complimentary and specialty is wider and more frustrating. The main dining rooms on Breakaway-class ships are fine but unexciting, while the specialty venues (particularly Le Bistro and Onda) justify the supplement.

My restaurant reviews

Solo Cruising on Norwegian Cruise Line

NCL is the best mainstream cruise line for solo travellers, and it is not close. The Studio cabin concept - compact single-occupancy rooms with no supplement and exclusive access to the Studio Lounge - exists on most modern NCL ships and is the gold standard for solo cruising in the mass market. The Studios are small (around 100 square feet on most ships) but purpose-built for one person, with a full-size bed, shower, and enough storage for a week. The Studio Lounge is the social hub, offering complimentary evening drinks, breakfast, and a ready-made community of fellow solo cruisers.

On Norwegian Prima, the Studio cabins are larger and better finished than on older ships, and the Studio Lounge has been upgraded. The Freestyle Cruising concept also works well for solos - no fixed dining means you never have to sit at a table for two in a room full of couples. The Indulge Food Hall is ideal for solo eating: communal seating, quick service, no awkwardness. On port days, NCL's solo-friendly shore excursion groups make it easy to explore without organising anything yourself.

Solo cabins Studio cabins on most modern ships (Breakaway, Prima class). No single supplement.
Studio Lounge Exclusive lounge for Studio guests. Complimentary evening drinks, breakfast, social events.
Single supplement None on Studios. 100-200% on standard double cabins.
Solo-friendly dining Freestyle means open seating everywhere. Indulge Food Hall ideal for solos.

Who Norwegian Cruise Line Is For

Let's be honest: who will love this line, and who should look elsewhere.

You'll love it if...
