How to Get To and From the Port of Miami for Cruisers

PortMiami is located on Dodge Island, a man-made island connected to downtown Miami via the PortMiami Tunnel. Here's everything you need to know about getting to and from the world's busiest cruise port.

MIA, Miami hotels, Brightline, or driving PortMiami cruise terminals Short, but origin-dependent · 10-60 min depending on start
At a glance

Pick your starting point

PortMiami is close to downtown, but the right transfer depends on whether you are coming from the airport, a local hotel, another Florida city, or your own car.

From MIA

Taxi or rideshare

$20-30 rideshare
20-30 min typical ride

For most fly-in passengers, a taxi or rideshare is the simplest answer. There is no direct public transport route to the cruise terminals.

From a hotel

Short Uber or taxi

Under 10 min typical ride
Downtown best base

If you are staying downtown or in Brickell, use a car for the last hop. Walking into PortMiami is not a sensible luggage plan.

From Florida

Brightline plus taxi

10-15 min station to port
MiamiCentral station

Use Brightline if you are coming from Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, or Orlando. You still need a taxi or rideshare from MiamiCentral.

Driving

Park at PortMiami

$25/day typical parking
On site best feature

Driving is convenient if Miami is part of a wider Florida trip, but the daily parking rate adds up quickly on a longer sailing.

After cruise

Leave buffer

7:30-10am typical exit
3+ hours flight buffer

For flights or trains after disembarkation, allow time for ship clearance, luggage, terminal traffic, and rideshare demand.

Step by step

Choose by where you are starting

PortMiami transfers are not difficult, but the best answer changes by origin. Start with the situation that matches your day.

01

If you are arriving from Miami International Airport

MIA to port20-30 min

Use taxi or rideshare. It is the cleanest airport-to-terminal transfer, and avoids dragging luggage through a multi-transfer public transport route.

02

If you are staying in downtown Miami or Brickell

Hotel to portUnder 10 min

Take a short taxi or rideshare. Even when the port looks close on a map, terminal roads and luggage make walking a bad plan.

03

If you are coming from elsewhere in Florida

BrightlineMiamiCentral

Brightline works well from Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, or Orlando. From MiamiCentral, budget for the final 10-15 minute taxi or rideshare to PortMiami.

04

If you are driving to the cruise

ParkingAbout $25/day

Use the official PortMiami parking information for your terminal. It is convenient, but the total cost can become meaningful on a week-long cruise.

05

If you are leaving PortMiami after disembarkation

Morning trafficBuild buffer

Most vessels begin disembarkation around 7:30am and finish around 10:00am. If you have a same-day flight or train, leave a sensible buffer rather than booking the tightest option.

06

At the terminal, use the porters

Drop-off zoneTip: $1-2 per bag

Use the terminal drop-off zone. Porters take tagged bags for cabin delivery, so keep documents, medicine, electronics, and valuables with you.

A view across PortMiami
PortMiami is close to downtown, but the terminals sit inside a busy working port. This is why I would plan a vehicle transfer rather than treating it like a walkable downtown hop.

What to use from each starting point

Prices move with demand, but this is the practical planning baseline for the common PortMiami journeys.

MethodCostTimeBest forTake
From MIA: Uber or Lyft $20-30 20-30 min Most fly-in cruisers Easiest: Simple airport-to-terminal transfer with live pricing.
From MIA: taxi about $27 20-30 min No app needed Good if the rideshare pickup is busy or surge pricing looks high.
From downtown or Brickell: taxi or rideshare Varies Under 10 min Local hotel stays Fastest: Use a short taxi, Uber, or Lyft from your hotel to the terminal drop-off zone.
From Florida by Brightline Train fare + ride 10-15 min from station Rail arrivals Useful from Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, or Orlando.
From Amtrak or Tri-Rail: taxi or rideshare Varies 30-40+ min Budget rail arrivals Use a taxi or rideshare from the station area. Public transport requires transfers and is awkward with cruise luggage.
Driving to PortMiami about $25/day On site Drivers Convenient, but the weekly cost climbs quickly.
Leaving after the cruise Varies Buffer needed Flights or trains Allow time for clearance, luggage, traffic, and rideshare demand.

What to watch for

  • Do not plan to walk into PortMiami. Pedestrian access is unsafe and discouraged.
  • Terminal traffic is real. Add buffer around embarkation and disembarkation windows.
  • Car rental is not inside the cruise terminals. Rental desks are linked to the Miami Intermodal Center near MIA.
  • Brightline does not go to the cruise terminals. MiamiCentral is still a short taxi or rideshare from PortMiami.
  • Keep essentials with you. Checked cruise bags may not reach your cabin for several hours.
My PortMiami rule is simple: choose the transfer by where you are starting, then keep the final hop direct. From MIA or a hotel, that usually means taxi or rideshare. From elsewhere in Florida, Brightline can make sense, but you still finish by car.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What time should I arrive at PortMiami?

Cruise lines provide check-in windows via email or their app. Plan extra buffer time for transfers, as rideshare availability may be limited on cruise arrival and departure days.

How long does it take to disembark at PortMiami?

Most vessels begin disembarkation around 7:30am and finish by about 10:00am. If you are flying home the same day, allow at least three hours between disembarkation and flight departure.

Can I rent a car from PortMiami?

No car rental desks operate inside the cruise terminals. Rental companies like Alamo, Budget, and Hertz serve the Miami Intermodal Center near MIA via shuttle access.

Can I explore Miami on my own after disembarking?

Yes, if your timing allows. After vessel clearance, you can store bags separately or use a post-cruise tour, but do not cut a same-day flight too fine.

How long is the ride from Fort Lauderdale Airport to PortMiami?

Allow 45-60 minutes by car. Rideshare typically costs about $60-$85, depending on demand.

Can I walk into PortMiami?

No. Pedestrian access is discouraged and unsafe.

How do I get my luggage to the cruise ship?

Porters are available at drop-off zones. Tip $1-$2 per bag; bags are tagged and delivered to your cabin.

Is there a map of PortMiami terminals?

Yes, terminal maps are available on the official PortMiami website and through the PortMiami App.
