I first arrived in Fort Lauderdale in the late 1990s (yes, I am that old) and stepped off the plane into that distinctive South Florida heat. The mix of oceanfront energy and the laid-back charm of East Las Olas Boulevard had me thinking, quite seriously, about never leaving. Since then, friends have made the area home, which gives me the perfect excuse to return regularly, along with Fort Lauderdale’s role as one of the world’s busiest cruise ports.

My guide should give you everything you need if you’re using Fort Lauderdale as your cruise gateway.

The Miami vs Fort Lauderdale Airport Dilemma

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is barely 10 minutes from Port Everglades (the name for Fort Lauderdale Cruise Port), which should make everything simple. It turns out the proximity is both the port’s biggest advantage and the source of some cruisers’ biggest mistakes.

Don’t agonise over flying into Miami, if the flights are only marginally cheaper. Factor in that Miami International is about 45-60 minutes away by road, longer in traffic (South Florida jams are notorious). A taxi or rideshare from Miami will set you back $75-100, compared to $20-25 from Fort Lauderdale. That cheaper flight often isn’t cheaper once you add transportation.

From Fort Lauderdale airport, most hotels offer shuttles (some free, some around $15-20), and rideshare pickup is straightforward. If you’re arriving with excessive luggage or travelling as a group, private transfers cost $45-60 per vehicle and eliminate the hassle of coordinating multiple cars.

Where to Stay near Port Everglades

The choice between beachside and portside accommodation comes down to whether you want sea views or convenience on embarkation morning. I’ve tried both approaches, and there’s no wrong answer as such (I prefer to be closer to the port!)

Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina — My regular choice not because of the rooms (which are really nice) but because of the outdoor pool overlooking the marina. You’re a three-minute walk to Gilbert’s 17th Street Grill and close enough to the port that transfers are quick.

Embassy Suites Fort Lauderdale 17th Street — Popular with cruise families because the shuttle service runs when they say it will, the bigger suite layout gives you space to spread out, and the included breakfast helps control costs.

DoubleTree Gallery One — this used to be my go-to hotel, but it’s not quite as good as it once was. On the plus side, it’s right next door to the Galleria Mall for last-minute cruise shopping. Factor in a longer shuttle/Uber time to the port.

Hyatt Place Fort Lauderdale 17th Street — Reliable mid-range option with free breakfast and dependable cruise port shuttles.

Hampton Inn Airport North Cruise Port — Purpose-built for cruise passengers with reliable shuttles to both the airport and Port Everglades.

Be warned! Shuttle reliability varies more than hotels admit. Sometimes the free shuttle means the departure time is unreliable, while the $15 shuttle is always on time. Ask questions! Almost always, I pre-book a private transfer or grab an Uber.

The Park and Cruise Question

Some Fort Lauderdale hotels have a “Park & Cruise” package, which can be good value vs Port Everglades’ official parking starting at $20 a day. BUT: check about security arrangements. Opt for covered, attended parking, not an open lot.

If you Park & Cruise, factor in your shuttle/Uber transfer costs both ways, plus the pain of hanging around for a shuttle.

Making the Most of Your Time

The beachfront is one of my favourite spots for an early morning walk, particularly with coffee from one of the local cafes at sunrise. East Las Olas Boulevard offers everything from casual seafood to upscale bistros, it’s where locals actually eat.

For something distinctly Floridian, Everglades airboat tours that depart from Fort Lauderdale are easily arranged and provide stories worth telling once you’re aboard. The Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi offers a floating tour of the city’s canals and waterfront mansions: part transport, part sightseeing experience.

The Miami Connection

I’ve recommended you fly into FLL for your Port Everglades cruise, but for many of us, that’s just not practical, and Miami International Airport is the right hub, or you’re transferring from PortMiami. Here’s what you need to know:

Drive from Miami – Port Everglades (or hotels): 45-60 minutes.

Rideshare between airports or cruise ports – $75-100

Private transfers (good for door-to-door) – $100-150

Brightline Train is super clean but may require transfers at either end.

FAQ

The combination of airport proximity, efficient port operations, and Fort Lauderdale’s inherent appeal makes this one of the more straightforward cruise departures you’ll experience. Just don’t be surprised if you find yourself, like I did, genuinely not wanting to leave, and planning your return before the ship has even cleared the harbour!
