Margaritaville at Sea

Short Florida sailings to the Bahamas and beyond.

Overview

Margaritaville at Sea is a Jimmy Buffett-themed cruise line operating short Florida sailings. The fleet currently runs two ships - the Paradise and the Islander - on 2-3 night itineraries from Palm Beach and other Florida homeports to the Bahamas and Key West. A third vessel, the Beachcomber, is scheduled to enter service in early 2027. No passport is required for the Bahamas run on a US itinerary. No flight needed if you are already in Florida.

The line positions itself deliberately at the budget end of the market. There are no formal nights, no dress code beyond smart-casual at dinner, and no pretence about what this is: a short, affordable sailing with a Margaritaville soundtrack. The January 2026 reimagining of the Paradise updated the dining programme significantly, adding a food hall model and expanding the sushi venue, while keeping the price point competitive with land-based alternatives.

It is a line best judged on its own terms rather than against mainstream competitors. The Paradise cannot match a Royal Caribbean or Norwegian ship on amenities, production shows, or cabin quality. What it offers instead is a two-night trip to the Bahamas for roughly the cost of a budget Florida hotel stay - with meals, entertainment, and a full sailing experience included.

Paradise

Paradise

Sailed
Launched 1992 · 25000 GT
1680 passengers

Compact ship operating 2-3 night Bahamas sailings from Palm Beach, FL. Originally built in 1992 as Costa Classica, rebranded 2022 with Jimmy Buffett Margaritaville theming. Budget-focused with casual atmosphere.

Islander

Islander

Launched 2000 · 85619 GT
2114 passengers

The larger of the two Margaritaville ships. Ex-Costa Atlantica (built 2000), sailing from Tampa on 4-8 night Western Caribbean itineraries. Three pool areas, balcony suites, and no fuel supplement.

Dining

Restaurants and dining on Margaritaville at Sea.

Included dining covers the High Tide Market buffet (four stations: pizzeria, Mexican, sandwich bar, dessert), the Cheeseburger in Paradise burger bar, and the Fins Dining main dining room for dinner and breakfast. This covers most meals across a short sailing without spending anything extra.

JWB Prime Steakhouse is the main surcharge option at around £39 ($49) per person before the 20% service charge. It books up on every sailing - reserve it at the check-in kiosk on embarkation day, not online. Far Side Sushi on Deck 9 is a la carte. The Margaritaville Coffee Shop charges for specialty coffees separately from the drink packages.

Solo Cruising on Margaritaville at Sea

Margaritaville at Sea does not market specifically to solo travellers. There are no dedicated solo cabins on either ship and the standard single supplement applies on most sailings - typically 100% of the double-occupancy fare. The line does run periodic solo offers (around $169 solo fare on selected Paradise sailings) but these are not permanent fixtures.

What the line does have is a social atmosphere that makes solo sailing genuinely easy. The ships are small enough that you will see the same people repeatedly, bars are sociable, and the Jimmy Buffett crowd tends to be friendly. For a first solo cruise or a short break between longer trips, the low price point offsets the supplement reasonably well.

Single supplement 100% on standard fares
Solo cabin option None on either ship
Solo fare offers Occasional (~$169 on Paradise)
Ship size Small - easy to meet people
Best itinerary for solo 3-night Nassau or 4-night with sea day

Who Margaritaville at Sea Is For

Let's be honest: who will love this line, and who should look elsewhere.

You'll love it if...

+ Budget-conscious cruisers: two nights to the Bahamas for less than a Florida hotel weekend
+ Florida locals who can drive to the port and skip the flight entirely
+ First-time cruisers wanting a short, low-stakes introduction to sailing
+ Jimmy Buffett fans and anyone who wants a relaxed Margaritaville atmosphere at sea
+ Couples or solo sailors after a quick getaway without formal nights or dress codes

Look elsewhere if...

Cruisers expecting mega-ship amenities - production shows, waterslides, rock walls - this is not that line
Anyone wanting a balcony cabin on Paradise: none exist, ocean view is the highest category
Families with young children expecting extensive dedicated programming or a large kids club
Cruisers who need a longer itinerary to feel the trip was worth the effort
Anyone comparing it directly to Royal Caribbean or Norwegian - different category entirely
